Alt Text Checker
Do the images on this page have usable alt text? Check every image for missing, empty, file-name-like, generic and repeated alt text before the page goes live.
What it checks
- Fix before publishing: images with no
altattribute (including<input type="image">and<area>), and links whose only content is an image withalt=""— the link then has no name. - Review: alt that looks like a file name (
IMG_2044.jpg), a generic word (“image”, “logo”), whitespace only, starts with “image of…”, is longer than 150 characters, or is the same on different images. alt=""on its own is correct for decorative images and passes; images hidden witharia-hiddenorrole="presentation"and 1×1 tracking pixels are not judged.
These are structural checks. Whether a description is accurate needs a person looking at the image — this tool doesn't look at images and uses no AI.
Example
A product page has <a href="/"><img src="logo.svg" alt=""></a> and a gallery where every photo has alt="product image". The check flags the logo link as having no name (Fix) and the gallery as repeated, generic alt text (Review).
FAQ
Does it describe my images for me?
No. Writing alt text needs to know why the image is there; the tool only finds the patterns that are wrong whatever the image shows.
Should decorative images have alt text?
They should have an empty alt attribute (alt=""), so screen readers skip them. That passes here.
Does it check CSS background images or images added by JavaScript?
No. It reads the HTML the server sends.
